MarkNode can export your work to standard file formats for sharing, printing, or use in other applications.
Exporting to DOCX
To export the current document as a Word file, press Cmd+Shift+E on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+E on Linux and Windows. This opens the export options dialog before the file is written.
Export Options
The dialog lets you configure the page setup before exporting:
- Page size — a wide range of sizes including A4, Letter, Legal, Tabloid, the full ISO A/B series, and more
- Orientation — portrait or landscape
- Margins — top/bottom/left/right margins, plus header margin, footer margin, gutter, a measurement unit (in/cm/mm/pt), and a mirror-margins option for double-sided layouts
Once you confirm the options, MarkNode generates the file and shows a notification when it is ready.
Formatting Preserved in DOCX
The exporter converts Markdown formatting to the equivalent Word styles:
| Markdown | DOCX output |
|---|---|
**bold** | Bold text |
_italic_ | Italic text |
~~strikethrough~~ | Struck-through text |
`inline code` | Monospace code style |
| Fenced code blocks | Formatted code block |
| Tables | Word table |
| Blockquotes | Indented block style |
| Ordered and unordered lists | Numbered and bulleted lists |
| Links | Word hyperlinks (internal and external) |
| Images | Embedded images |
Math ($…$, $$…$$) | Native, editable Word equations |
Headings map to the corresponding Word heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, and so on), which means the exported document works with Word’s outline and navigation features.
After Export
Once the export completes, a notification appears with two quick actions:
- Open file — opens the DOCX in your default Word-compatible application
- Show in Finder / File Manager — reveals the file in the file manager so you can move or share it
Exporting Mind Maps
When you have a mind map open, you can export it as a PNG image. Click the Export as Image button in the mind map toolbar (it is also available from the canvas right-click menu). MarkNode saves a PNG of the current map, named after the project.
